What is a Child Life Specialist?

Certified Child life specialists (CCLS) are experts in child development who help children and families effectively cope with challenging healthcare experiences. Through interventions such as therapeutic play, age-appropriate preparation, and procedural support, child life specialists aim to decrease the anxiety, stress, and fear often associated with the unfamiliar medical environment.

While child life programs are traditionally hospital-based, many child life specialists are expanding into their communities, offering specialized psychosocial support in settings such as dental offices, and private practice. To learn more about child life services, please click here!
